Abstract

1430824 Welding by fusion MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 24 July 1973 [27 July 1972] 35114/73 Heading B3R [Also in Division G3] The characteristics of a welding operation are controlled according to the detected sound of a welding arc or molten pool during welding, or a welding bead immediately after welding. As shown, in use with a plasma arc welding torch 11, microphone 13 detects the arc sound which has a component between 3À5 and 4À5 kHz if the arc is unstable. This component is passed by filter 14 and, if greater than a set threshold, is amplified and used to control the arc characteristics, e.g. by control of welding speed or current, plasma gas flow rate or wire feed speed. The system may be used in other types of welding, e.g. for MIG aluminium welding and can detect the sound of puckering of a welded bead.
