689,882. Electrically heated thermal images. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON. CO., Ltd. Aug. 21, 1951 [Aug. 28, 1950], No. 18696/51. Class 39(iii) [Also in Group XIX] A thermal-responsive device 12 for indicating at 15 the temperature of electrical apparatus e.g. a transformer in a tank 1 normally filled with liquid 4 is mounted in a housing 10 exteriorly of the tank and in hydraulic communication therewith so that the liquid normally flows through the housing over the thermo-responsive device 12 therein, and a heating coil 23 in the housing in heat-exchange relation with the device 12 is energized by a current transformer 16 in electrical series with the apparatus 1, the calibration of the heating of the coil 23 being effected by an adjustable resistor 24 in parallel with the coil 23 and mounted on the outside of the tank. The device 12 thus forms a thermal image of the windings of the transformer &c. 1. The housing 10 may be connected to a header of several cooling tubes 5 of the tank 1. The device 12 may be a resistance element sensitive to temperature' or a spiral bimetal with a. shaft carrying a pointer or having cams actuating switches or relays controlling auxiliary coolers, indicators e.g. a sound alarm, or a circuit breaker for the apparatus 1. The device 12 is protected from the liquid by a sealed casing 11 over a certain length of which is wound the heater 23. The indicator housing 15 is rigidly connected to the device 12 and has a collar 14 screwed into a flange at the end of the housing 10. Where there are no cooling tubes 5, the housing 10 is mounted directly on the outer wall of the tank 1 and has a baffle, above and below which the wall is apertured, so that liquid flows around the baffle and over the device 12 in the housing, which is preferably triangular in vertical cross-section. The temperature indicator has two pointers, one of which registers maximum temperature and may be reset magnetically (see Group XIX).
