566,645. Thermal instruments. LANDIS & GYR SOC. ANON. Oct. 16, 1943, No. 17042. Convention date, Nov. 7, 1942. [Class 37] In apparatus for counting current impulses of short duration, such as those resulting from atmospheric effects or switching operations on long lines, a fraction of the diverted current flowing through a diverting resistance is passed through a resistance arranged in a vessel filled with gas, the gas expanding under the influence of the heating which takes place and actuating a counting device through a flexible diaphragm. A heating resistance 1 is supported by current leads 12 passing through a glass foot 11 to which is fused a flange 10 connected to a corrugated metal extensible diaphragm 3. The extensible chamber thus formed is filled with an inert gas of low specific heat and is supported by a socket 13 with connecting pins 14. On the cover of the corrugated metal tube 3 is arranged a pin 15 which transmits the movement of the diaphragm through a lever 16, toothed segment 17, and gear-wheel 18 to a counting mechanism 19. A second diaphragm 20 compensates for the effect of ambient temperature on the diaphragm 3. The pin 15 may, alternatively, close a contact in the circuit of a relay which operates the counter. In another arrangement the counter is operated by clockwork, operation of the pin 15 releasing a wheel in the train and permitting it to make one revolution, which causes the counting train to be advanced by one figure. A protective surge diverter 6, Fig. 1, is connected between the overhead line 5 and earth. In the earth lead is a resistance 8 across which the heating resistance 1 is connected. The resistance 8 may be such that the voltage across it does not rise with the current strength according to a straight line law, so that the heating resistance 1 is protected against excess current. A choking coil 9 is connected across the resistance 8, its inductance being so chosen that its impedance is high for the surge discharge, but small for the follow current. The apparatus may be combined with a recording arrangement for the determination of the approximate strength of the diverted current, the movement of the diaphragm being utilised for measuring the current.
