589,276. Thermal ammeters and voltmeters. LANDIS & GYR SOC. ANON. March 21, 1945, No. 7154. Convention date, April 5, 1944. Addition to 566,645. [Class 37] A meter for counting and measuring shortcurrent impulses as described in the parent Specification includes a vessel the interior of which is closed by a flat diaphragm and is connected with the exterior through a channel offering great resistance to the flow of fluid therethrough. A cylindrical vessel 1, Fig. 1, is closed at the bottom by an insulating disc 2 through which pass terminals 3, 4 connected to a heating wire 7. This is stretched on two small insulating frames 8, of which only one is shown. The vessel 1 is provided with a flange 10 to which are attached by screws 13 clamping rings 11, 12 having between them a diaphragm 14 of thin oiled silk. This carries a pressure transmission plate 15 with an upwardly bent outer edge, which is attached to the diaphragm 14 by means of a plate 16 and discs 17, 18. Attached to the plate 16 by screws 19 is a plate 20 carrying a plunger 21. The lower face of the plate 20 is formed with a channel 22 connected with the interior and exterior of the vessel 1 through holes 23, 24. Between the plates 16, 20 is a packing disc 25 of thin oiled cloth. The plunger 21 is carried in a guide 26 which is held in a cover-plate 28. The channel 22 may, as shown in Fig. 2, consist of concentric circles which are interrupted by a sector and are connected by radial channels so as to produce a continuous channel. Alternatively the channel may be spiral or helical. The wire 7 is heated by the impulse to be measured, thereby heating the air inside the vessel 1 and causing it to expand so that the diaphragm 14 moves the plunger 21 upwards. This movement is transmitted to a metering mechanism as described in the parent Specification. Any undesired stressing of the diaphragm due to variations of temperature or pressure of the surrounding air, which take place comparatively slowly, are compensated by the channel 22 which permits a slow equalisation of the internal and external pressure. The channel 22 may alternatively be sitauted in the wall of the vessel 1 or on the lower disc 2.
