Abstract

689,791. Road-traffic signs. INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS, Ltd. May 18, 1951 [May 19, 1950; July 20, 1950], Nos. 12614/50 and 18153/50. Class 3 (ii) A unit for marking lines on road surfaces comprises an elongated strip 10 of light-coloured resilient material such as rubber or plastic which is formed integrally with ribs 12 disposed at a small angle to the transverse axis of the strip and having vertical reflecting surfaces. The plastic material may be white polyvinyl chloride. The strip has bevelled edges 11 and is provided with a plurality of parallel ribs 12 which are inclined at a small angle, e.g. 5 degrees to the tranverse axis of the strip, so that the ribs are substantially at right angles to some of the rays of light from the headlamps of vehicles, and their vertical edges are highly polished to give maximum reflection..The portions of the ribs overlying the bevelled edges of the strip taper away to the edges. The ribs may be interrupted at intervals to provide gaps in which reflecting beads 16 (not shown in Fig. 1, shown in Figs. 4 and 5) are embedded in the strip. the beads being silvered on their undersides. The strip is secured to the road surface either by applying an adhesive such as rubber latex or asphalt to the road surface and then applying the strip, or by coating the strip with adhesive which is allowed to dry and applying a solvent to the road surface and pressing the strip in place. The strip may additionally be secured by nails passing through countersunk apertures 14.
