Cigarettes having a tobacco density increasing progressively towards one or both ends are formed by engaging an unwrapped tobacco rod 1, which may have been formed by the apparatus described in Specification 646,746 or that described in Specification 440,182, successively by elements, such as fingers 4, 5, 6, which advance succeeding tobacco portions by successively smaller amounts. The fingers 4, 5, 6 are duplicated as shown, to form two sets mounted on a driven wheel 14 and engaging the rod 1, through a slot in the usual compression tongue 3 of a continuous-rod machine, at positions just behind subsequent cut-off points, the positions at which successive sets engage the rod 1 being one or two cigarette lengths apart as required. The fingers 5 are fast with the wheel 14 and the fingers 4, 6 mounted on pivots 7, 8 thereon so as to rotate with the wheel but to be advanced and retarded respectively relatively thereto, during their contact with the rod 1, by coaction with stationary cams 11, 12 against which they are pressed by springs 13, the effect being that though all the fingers move faster than the rod whilst in contact therewith, the speed difference is less for each successive finger, resulting in a partial replacement by each finger of tobacco displaced by the preceding finger. Two only or more than three fingers may be used. According to the Provisional Specification, the first finger of each set to operate on the rod may be rigid with the wheel, the other fingers being camactuated during operation so as to be retarded relatively to the first finger by successively greater amounts.
