689,343. Moulding plant-containing earthpots. KRAUSE, B. Jan. 2, 1951 [Jan. 2, 1950], No. 135/51. Class 87 (ii). [Also in Group XXX] Plant-containing earth pots are made by depositing earth from a horizontally reciprocating feed box 6 around a mandrel 21, lowering the mandrel so as to leave a space into which the roots of a plant are lowered by a vertically reciprocating holder 15, then pressing the earth around the root by means of horizontally reciprocating dies 22, 23. After the dies have moved apart again, the mandrel 21 is raised to eject the compressed earth pot. The feed box 6 is reciprocated by a continuously rotating shaft 28 having right- and left-handed screw threads which run into each other at either end. The feed-box carries cams 25, 26 which actuate the dies 22, 23 through levers 40, 41, and cams 24, 24a which actuate the mandrel 21 and plantholder 15 through levers 38, 39. The levers 41, 42 also bear upon adjustable cams 50, 51 which limit the stroke of the dies 22, 23. These cams may be designed to impart a slight closing moving movement to the dies before the mandrel 21 moves down. The hopper 10, which carries a pivoted sieve 54, is mounted on pivots at its front end and connected to the frame of the machine by springs (not shown) at its rear end. The hopper is vibrated by means of a roller 11 on the feed box 6 which contacts a corrugated plate 12. The ejected earth-pot is pushed into a shoot 55 by the feed-box 6 and falls onto a setting-rack 56 which has a number of prongs 60 upon which the earth-pots may be placed. The shoot may be replaced by a conveyer belt and the setting rack may be placed on the conveyer. The conveyer is moved forward step by step by means of a pin (hot shown) on one of the dies 22, 23. This pin actuates a spring-loaded pawl which co-operates with a rachet wheel on one of the rollers of the conveyer.
