Two separate inner liners 2, 4 are provided within the outer wall 1 to form a low temperature frozen food compartment 3 and a fresh food compartment 5 at a higher temperature, and blocks 20, 24, 32, of moisture-impervious heat insulating material such as foamed polystyrene are disposed in contact with the outside of the top, back and sides of the frozen food compartment, leaving the bottom 17 exposed for the collection on it of frost from moisture in the insulation space. On defrosting, the water is collected in a receptacle 16 also of polystyrene arranged between the compartments and is discharged to a rceptacle in the fresh food compartment 5. Penetration of moisture into the main insulating material 6 e.g. glass wool is thereby minimised. The compartments have separate doors 9, 10 and the frozen food compartment 3 is cooled by evaporator pipes 11 secured to the exterior of the liner 2. The compartment 5 is maintained at a higher temperature e.g. by the system of Specification 649,373. A rubber tube 12 connects an opening in the bottom of the liner 2 to an opening in the top of the liner 4 to direct defrost water from the interior of the frozen food compartment to a receptacle in the fresh food compartment, and holes 18 in the rubber tube allow the melt water in the receptacle 16 to be discharged. A cup 14 covers the hole in the liner 2 and a cellulose sponge washer 19 minimises passage of air through the hole 18. Moisture from the insulation surrounding the compartment 5 passes to the bottom well 17 of the liner 2 through passage 30 above the receptacle 16. The lower end of the tube 12 may be shaped to direct the melt water down the rear wall of the liner 4. The blocks 32 of insulating material behind the breaker strips 7 prevent sweating in this region.
