Abstract

689,043. Making pipes; stamping. FERRAND, G. Feb. 1, 1950 [Feb. 15, 1949], No. 2672/50. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXVIII] A composite metal tube is produced from at least two cylindrical elements, the outer of which has a limit of proportional elongation greater than that of the inner, by interfitting the elements and subjecting the inner element to an expansive stress until the outer element is subject to an elastic elongation greater than the limit of proportional elongation of the inner element so that when pressure is released the inner element remains permanently set and the outer element elastically stressed. In an embodiment three tubes 1, 2, 3 are slidingly interfitted and placed between plates 4, 5 of a hydraulic press. Fluid is admitted to the tubes from a pipe 6 until the tubes 2, 3 are permanently set. On releasing the pressure the tube 1 contracts on to the tubes 2, 3. The tubes 2, 3 may be prehardened by applying radial stress thereto in a rigid mould or they may be of different material to the tube 1. The stressing may take place in steps after each successive smaller element is assembled.
