Abstract

688,978. Filters. STERALIC FILTERS, Ltd. Dec. 20, 1951 [Sept. 27, 1950], No. 23692/50. Class 46 A filter of the type comprising a casing for retaining a filter unit and having an entrance and an exit for the liquid one of which is associated with means for securing the filter to a tap or the like, has a casing comprising two axially separable sections, one section having carrier means secured to or integral with it and adapted to receive a filter unit, the carrier means including an aperture through which the filter unit may be removed in a substantially transverse direction when the sections are separated. A casing 1 comprising a body section 2 and a lid section 3 has screwed into the latter a carrier member 6 formed from an upper ring 7 and shouldered lower ring 8 joined by three asymetrically disposed lugs 9 so that a filter unit 19 may be introduced into or removed from the carrier member 6 laterally through the opening between the extreme lugs 9. The unit 19 is retained in a groove 10 of the lower ring 8 of the member 6 by a rubber band 23 secured to the unit. The body section 2 is maintained in contact with the lid section 3 through a gasket 30 by a ring nut 16 threaded on to an outlet pipe 15 screwed into the carrier member 6. A further sealing gasket 33 is provided between the shoulder 31 or the ring 8 and a shoulder 32 on the body section 2. The filter unit comprises, e.g. activated charcoal enclosed in a cardboard ring 20 and covered by cloth discs 21, 22 secured to the ring. Liquid to be filtered from a tap to which the device is secured by a resilient ring 36 passes first through gauze 24 on a plug 25, and then through the unit 19, the filtrate issuing partly through holes 13 in the disc 11 of the carrier member 6 into a space 17 and thence through holes 18 into the outlet pipe 15, and partly through hole 12 into the pipe 15. According to the Provisional Specification no rubber band 23 is provided on the unit 19 but the upper of the cloth discs (21), is of such a size as to provide a flange held on to the upper surface of the lower ring 8 of the carrier member 6 by a retaining disc between which and the lid 3 a helical spring is accommodated. The retaining member has holes for passage of liquid and peripheral notches to accommodate the lugs 9. When lifted above the upper ring 7 and rotated slightly it is held by the spring on to the upper surface of the ring 7 nermitting removal and replacement of the filter unit.
