Metal powders, other than iron, having a particle size less than 6m are formed by decomposition of the corresponding carbonyls in a hot free space using a throughput of carbonyl greater than that which would result in formation of powder of larger particle size, a greater amount of heat being supplied to the space as necessary for decomposition of the greater amount of carbonyl.
