Abstract

688,831. Brick &c. kilns. HABLA, A. Jan. 2, 1950, No. 30703/49. Class 51 (ii). In a continuous kiln for firing bricks, &c. the burning space is divided by partition walls a of green bricks into three burning sections b<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>2</SP> and b<SP>3</SP> provided with a series of openings o<SP>1</SP>, o<SP>2</SP> and o<SP>3</SP> in the floor, communicating by flues k<SP>1</SP>, k<SP>2</SP> and k<SP>3</SP> controlled by dampers d with the smoke flue r in a central wall c, a fan v being connected to said flue r. The side walls m, end walls e, and central wall c are built as disclosed in Specification 389,689. Horizontal grates P built into the end walls e communicate with flues K<SP>1</SP> or K<SP>2</SP> having dampers d<SP>1</SP> and opening into the burning sections by numerous ports in the end walls A. The burning sections are further subdivided by transverse partitions i<SP>1</SP>-i<SP>20</SP> of paper or other combustible material near the flue openings o<SP>1</SP>, o<SP>2</SP> and o<SP>3</SP>, forming a series of triple chambers. In operation, a small fire is built on the lower grates P, Fig. 2, the damper d<SP>1</SP> in the flue K<SP>2</SP> is closed and appropriate dampers d opened and gradually closed in turn so that the ware in the first five or six triple chambers is dried, the appropriate partitions i<SP>1</SP>-i<SP>6</SP> being burnt away. A full fire is then built up on the grates P and fuel added progressively through feed holes f distributed over the entire area of the roof p, the fire in the grates P being gradually allowed to die down as the firing zone progresses along the triple chambers. After the grates P have cooled down the damper d' is fully opened or removed altogether, the kiln then being operated continuously with passage of hot air from cooling triple chambers to drying triple chambers in known manner through a hot air flue W and tubes connecting ports W<SP>1</SP> in the centre wall c. Local overheating is avoided by supplying excess air through the flues B and the appropriate flue k<SP>1</SP>, k<SP>2</SP> or k<SP>3</SP> and corresponding opening o<SP>1</SP>, o<SP>2</SP> or o<SP>3</SP>, by removing the lids B<SP>1</SP>. The partition walls a may be varied in thickness or method of assembly, e.g. they may be set up as longitudinal gratings and the number of burning sections may also be varied. The flues K<SP>1</SP> and K<SP>2</SP> may be replaced by single flues connecting individual burning sections Figs 5 and 6 (not shown). Specifications 311,884, [Class 51 (ii)], and 426,133 also are referred to.
