Abstract

688,286. Hydraulic shock absorbers. NEWTON & BENNETT, Ltd. May 24, 1951 [May 25, 1950], No. 13119/50. Class 108 (iii). A valve for a hydraulic shock absorber of the kind comprising a flexible disc valve having a facial seat-engaging surface complementary to a seating, is characterized by means permitting controlled movement of the seating under hydraulic pressure in one direction while in seated relation with the valve disc whereby, upon cessation of such controlled movement the valve disc by further flexing can separate from the seating to permit hydraulic flow in one direction and by resilient means permitting separation of the seating from the valve disc under hydraulic pressure in the opposite direction to permit the opposite direction of flow of the hydraulic fluid. In the arrangement shown, as applied to a valve controlling fluid flow between a shock absorber cylinder a and a reservoir cylinder arranged concentrically thereof, the cylinder a is provided with an upwardly domed end pressing c having apertures c3 and radially spaced projections c4 which engage the lower end of the reservoir cylinder. A spring-loaded tube f projecting through the dome of the pressing c carries a seating disc g which engages an annular valve disc e. Upward movement of the tube f is limited by a spring abutment j. Leakage through the tube f is determined by a wire k. In operation, increasing fluid pressure above the valve, flexes the disc e downwardly, the seating g moving with it, until the latter engages a shim h and the seating and disc separating to a valve-open position. Fluid flow in the opposite direction lifts the seating g which then functions as a plate valve relative to the valve disc e. The valve opening in the downward direction of fluid may be modified by causing the seating g to flex over a curved backing member on the shim h. The number and thickness of the shims may be varied. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the pressing c is flat-bottomed and is threaded to receive an adjustable plug carrying the spring-loaded seating.
