Abstract
687,613. Engraving. HOWEY, W. C., and HOWEY, W. R. Jan. 19, 1951, No. 1528/51. Class 100 (ii). [Also in Group XL (b)] In a process of engraving a sheet of material for copying an original design by means of photo-electric scanning in which an oscillating engraving tool is used having its depth of cut controlled by the photo-electric cell, the tool (Fig. 3) has a shank formed towards the end with a square portion 15 tapered at a uniform angle towards a point 14 formed with a larger angle of taper. As shown, the point 14 is conical. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the point is pyramidal. The tip 24 may be slightly rounded. Fig. 6 shows the impressions formed with a tool having a conical point. The impressions formed are wholly conical for shallow cuts and become square in cross section merging into conical shape for deep cuts 22. The upstanding portions between deep cuts have a steep pillar-like structure and are not easily crushed when a matrix is taken from the sheet under pressure. For engraving celluloid, the tool is heated electrically by a coil surrounding the shank and is clad with a layer of copper so that heat is readily conveyed to the point. Typical dimensions for the tools are given.
