Abstract
Pigmentary titanium dioxide of which at least 90 per cent consists of rutile, is produced by discharging a uniform premixture of titanium tetrachloride vapours, gases containing free oxygen, and a volatile aluminium compound in amount sufficient to yield a product containing 0.01-10 per cent alumina, into a combustion zone, suitably at a linear flow rate of 1-50 metres per second, the mixture being at a temperature of 135-500 DEG C., and continuously contacting the premixture with an auxiliary flame sustained by a separate inflow of combustible gas to ignite the mixture and maintain it in a flaming state. Suitable aluminium compounds are aluminium halides, e.g. chloride, trimethyl aluminiums &c. The aluminium chloride may be mixed with the titanium chloride to be vaporized, by passing the oxygen-containing gas therethrough or it may be separately sublimed, e.g. by passing chlorine, with or without a diluent gas, over aluminium shavings or a mixture of alumina and carbon, or carbon monoxide and chlorine, or phosgene, over alumina, the vapours being added to the titanium chloride vapours. The premixture should contain at least 50 per cent, up to a surplus, of oxygen for the decomposition of the titanium tetrachloride. Inert gas such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen may also be present. Methane, acetylene, hydrogen &c. or, preferably, carbon monoxide are employed as combustible gases. Temperatures of 1000-1600 DEG C immediately ambient to the auxiliary flame are specified. Examples disclose burners consisting of concentric tubes, the titanium chloride mixture supply tube being surrounded by, and in some cases also surrounding, the supply tubes for the auxiliary flame-producing gases. The product may evacuated to remove chlorine and hydrogen chloride, and neutralized with a small amount of lime. Specification 673,782 is referred to.
