Abstract

686,516. Automatic circuit-breakers. LANDIS & GYR SOC. ANON. July 13, 1951 [July 15, 1950], No. 16711/51. Class 38 (v) In a thermally-released, automatic circuit-breaker one of the "releasing" parts is of metal and the other is of glass so that the frictional resistance between them is low and substantially constant. In Fig. 1, the circuit-breaker contacts 1, 2 are held closed by an overset toggle 7 extending between levers 3 and 8, which are pivoted at 4 and 9 and biased by tension springs 6 and 10, respectively. A bell-crank lever 14 is biased by a spring 15 and has a glass plate 18 abutting a knife-edge 20 on a metal bell-crank lever 13. Under excess-current conditions, a bimetallic strip 12 turns the lever 13 about its pivot until the knife edge 20 slips off the edge 19 of the plate 18. The lever 14 is then turned by the spring 15 so that its arm 14<SP>1</SP> strikes a projection 17 to collapse the toggle 7. The lever 3 is turned about its axis 4 by the spring 6 to open the contacts and at the same time to reset the lever 14 by means of a link 16, so that the knife edge 20 can re-engage the glass plate 18 on the cooling of the bimetallic strip. The relaxing of the pressure on the lever 8 by the toggle 7 enables means (not shown) to move the operating lever 11 to the off position, so that the spring 10 is able to reset the toggle 7, and the circuit is then automatically reset ready for reclosure. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the lever 14 has a cylindrical glass part which normally abuts a transverse surface on the lever 13.
