Abstract

462,953. Photographic flashlight apparatus. SCHARBERG, F. B. BEDEUS-. Aug. 5, 1936, No. 21610. [Class 98 (i)] [Also in Group XXI] In apparatus for the simultaneous ignition of a flashlight and operation of a photographic shutter, the fusible element is connected in series with a relay and upon fusion operates the said relay to open the shutter. The relay 1 is in series with a battery 4, the ignition element 2 of a flashlight and a push-button 3. A second circuit is formed through a release magnet 7 for the shutter lever 10, the armature 5 of the relay 1, the button 3, battery 4, and contacts 6, 6a. After depression of the pushbutton 3 and disruption of the fusible element 2, the armature 5 springs back to effect connection with the contact 6a, to energize the magnet 7 and operate the shutter. An auxiliary relay 8 with its armature 9 carrying the contact 6a, may be provided to ensure better contact during completion of the circuit to the release magnet 7. The relay 8 is connected in parallel with the relay 1 and has a greater electrical resistance than the latter. In a modification, the release magnet itself acts on the armature 5 to produce lasting contact in the circuit of the release magnet. In a modification, Fig. 4, the relay 1 is provided with an opposed winding 11 connected in parallel with the main winding. The magnetic forces normally cancel each other, but when the element 2 is fused, current only flows in the winding 11 and attracts the armature 5 to close contacts 6, 6a in the circuit of the release magnet 7. In a modification (not shown), the release magnet is combined with the relay which has two windings, so that when the element 2 is fused, one winding is de-energized and the release is actuated. A device is provided for cutting out the release circuit and comprises a lever 17, Fig. 6, carrying an insulated pin 18 which passes through a hole in the contact spring 23 and engages the contact 19. The lever is integral with the armature 5 and is pivoted at 16, at which point is also pivoted a bell-crank 20 carrying a roller 22 and a looking arm 24. When the armature 5 is attracted, the pin 18 raises the contact spring 19, and the roller 22 raises the spring 19, the contacts being maintained separated. When the lever 20 is tilted, a spring 26 urges the arm 24 behind the lug 25 where it is locked. When the element 2 fuses, the armature lever 17 falls back and contact in the release circuit is maintained by the spring 19. Then when the release magnet 7 is actuated, the armature 10 moves and withdraws the lug 25, allowing the bellcrank lever 20 to return and break the contacts in the release circuit. Remote and direct control of the shutter is provided by pushbuttons across the points 13, 14, 15. The cable control for the shutter is operated from the armature 10 by the device shown in Fig. 10. The push-button of the cable is held in a recess 38 on an arm 37 pivoted at 42 and resiliently held by a spring 44. A roller 45 on the U-shaped arm 37 bears again an articulated part 48 which is also engaged by a part 50 integral with the release armature 10. The part 48 is resiliently held by a spring 51. When the armature 10 moves about the pivot 49, the part 48 moves out of the way of the roller 45 so that the spring 44 operates the release cable. The mechanism is reset by returning the arm 37 to its original position. The leads b, c, Fig. 13, of the flashlight bulb are fixed under initial tension to the ignition element d to produce interruption at the instant of ignition. Alternatively, a connecting part of readily fusible metal is inserted in the supply leads.
