Abstract

Irregularly-shaped articles are held fixedly on a carrier which moves them so that the irregular surface contacts and passes over a non-driven coating roller of a soft spongy nature such roller being displaceable and rotatable by contact with said surface and being deformable so as to adapt itself to the irregularities of the surface. Referring to the drawings, as carriage d is moved forward and the toe cap portion of the footwear is about to engage roller c, cam 16 acts on stop 23 causing a <PICT:0686243/III/1> slight downward movement of arm 1 of lever b whereby roller c is moved downwardly as shown in dotted lines, sufficiently for the lower portion of the footwear to engage tangentially the maximum periphery of roller c, and when toe-cap reaches plane 28, said stop 23 is released from cam 16, leaving lever b free to assume under action of counterweight the upper position where it contacts the underside of bulges over the lower sides which are coated until cam 17 strikes stop 23 lowering the entire lever b and roller c.
