Abstract
A ferrous article and ceramic material impregnated with a halide of a coating metal are heated at 700-1400 DEG C in a container, the article being out of contact with the material. Porcelain or sillimenite blocks may be impregnated with chromous chloride by lining a container with them and filling the space with chromium, or an alloy or compound thereof, and ammonium chloride or by packing the blocks with intersposed layers of the chromiumammonium chloride mixture, and heating to 700-1400 DEG C. The diffusion container may be lined with the impregnated blocks and the ferrous articles placed on a horizontal shelf or shelves, the container being sealed and evacuted to 0.5-40 mms. of mercury prior to heating.
