Abstract

685,703. Grinding screw-threads. ROLLSROYCE, Ltd. April 11, 1951 [Jan. 17, 1950], No. 1269/50. Class 60. [Also in Group XXIV] A method of making bolts, studs or like members by grinding the threads therein includes the step of withdrawing the grinding wheel gradually from the blank at the junction of the threaded and plain portions thereof so as to form a run-out portion which has a gradually decreasing thread depth and extends axially of the member for a distance at least equal to the pitch of the thread and preferably for a distance equal to twice the pitch. The grinding wheel may be run out so that its grinding edge travels along a circular arc 13a, Fig. 1, or a straight line 13b, Fig. 4; in the former case, the radius of the arc may be selected so that the displacement area (i.e. the amount by which the axial cross-section of the land of the full female thread engaged by the bolt or stud must be reduced to occupy the run-out portion of the latter) for any given thread is equal to, or less than, that of the corresponding die-cut thread. The grinding wheel may be controlled to produce the run-out by providing it with a follower co-operating with a cam which is arranged so as to be adjustable axially of the bolt or stud.
