Abstract
685,632. Fire-escape ladders. BERNER, C. A. O. Sept. 6, 1950 [Sept. 20, 1949], No. 24193/49. Class 20(ii) A telescopic fire escape ladder A, B, C, when inoperative, is nested on a carrier 2 and its movement to operative position is controlled by radius rods 5 connected to the top (in the operative position) ladder section A at one end and guided in horizontal slots 73 in the carrier at the other end. In operation, a shaft i, on which the section A is freely mounted, is driven by an electric motor or by hand and drives, by means of a sprocket, a chain 23 connected to both ends of the ladder and the ladder and radius rods move horizontally until slots in the ends of the latter engage a rod 6, about which the rods 5 pivot and the ladder tilts and moves outwardly and downwardly from the building into the operative position. The rods 5 move in slots in the floor of the carrier 2 adapted to be covered by plates 7 moved into position by hinge connections 8 to the rods 5. When the ladder moves to inoperative position the plates 7 move from a rod 11 and dip under the floor of the carrier. The ladder sections are provided with speedgoverning devices 30 driven by chains 31 connected to the ends of the ladder sections, the devices 30 having free wheel sprockets to allow the ladder to be raised. The upper and lower ladder sections may be connected by chains 40, 44, Fig. 6, passing over sprockets 42 on the ends of the middle sections. The carrier 2 may be mounted on wheels 3 or fixed in position. The top section may carry a tripping mechanism to release the second section after predetermined travel of the top section. Specification 664,632 is referred to.
