Abstract

685,545. Road sweeping machines. LEWIN ROAD SWEEPERS, Ltd. Jan. 19, 1951 [Jan. 16, 1950], No. 1406/50. Class 107 [Also in Group XXX] A refuse collecting vehicle of the kind comprising a refuse receiving compartment and conveyer means for feeding refuse to the compartment (especially a road sweeping machine) has the refuse compartment 27 at the rear of the vehicle, a sloping floor 28 down which the refuse slides by gravity to the rear end, conveyer means 16 feeding the refuse to the upper front end of the refuse compartment (whence is passes through opening 25) and a refuse discharge opening at the lower rear end of the refuse compartment, closed by a door 34. The door 34 is actuable from the forward driving compartment 15, and when fully opened is elevated to such a height relative to the ground as to clear the full charge of refuse gravitationally discharged from the discharge opening. The front, steerable, wheels 14 are driven by engine 11. The space 46 forms a water tank and is filled by pump 50. The space 54 may form a fuel tank. The door actuating means is double acting hydraulic rams 42 controlled from the cab by valve 44. An opening 57 is provided for the insertion of bulky objects. The sweeping brush may be supplied with water as disclosed in Specification 685,550. The further features disclosed in Specification 685,546, 685,547, 685,548, 685,549, 685,550, and 685,551 may be incorporated.
