Abstract

685,439. Armoured cables. FELTEN & GUILLEAUME CARLSWERK AKT.-GES. Oct. 23, 1951 [Nov. 16, 1950], No. 24692/51. Class 36. The armouring of a submarine cable consists of two stranded layers of steel wires of high tensile strength which are laid in opposite directions so that the torsion torques arising during laying or taking up of the cable are substantially balanced, the wires of the lower layer being stranded with a greater untwisting tendency and those of the upper layer with a smaller untwisting tendency than the ideal one, the ideal being that which ensures that after being stranded through 360 degrees the wires will lie again in their original position with no internal twist. The untwisting tendency is so dimensioned that after being run into the laying ship the individual layers of the armouring have no torsion torque.
