Abstract

684,743. Sliding-clasp fasteners. PRYMVERCHLUSS GES. May 25, 1951, No. 12327/51. Class 44 The elements of a sliding-clasp fastener are formed from a strip in two stages. In the first stage the strip 1 is passed through a stamping device indenting the coupling projections 3 and cutting away parts 4 to form the outer profile of the elements but leaving them still connected by a web 7. In the form shown elements are formed on each side of the web and may be arranged symmetrically or staggered. The connected rows of elements are passed between notched wheels 10, the outsides of the elements jamming in the notches whereby they are located during the second stage in which the part 8 is removed in a punching device. The part 8 may be partly severed or indented in the first stage. The removal of the part 8 separates the elements and forms the tape gripping jaws. The rough comers of the elements may be removed and the exposed surfaces treated between the first and second stages. The separated elements are carried in the notches to the position where they are to be fixed to the tape. The tape is advanced into the gap between the jaws by a pair of comb members 16 engaging behind the bead 13. With the tape in position a tool 12 is forced against the ends of the jaws, the tool having rounded operating surfaces adapted to turn the jaws over around the bead. The wheels 10 are advanced in steps by a maltese-cross gear 18 driving through worm gears 17.
