Abstract

684,614. Mechanical presses. CLEARING MACHINE CORPORATION. Dec. 20, 1949 [Feb. 23, 1949], No. 32599/49. Class 87 (ii). [Also in Group XXII] A forming press, e.g. for working metal, comprises two forming members 26, 26' each actuated by a pair of toggles 39, 40 and 39<SP>1</SP>, 40<SP>1</SP>, and driving means for simultaneously operating the toggles, which are so arranged that the lateral movement of the pivot connecting the pair of links forming one toggle is opposite in direction to that of the corresponding pivot of the other toggle. Thus, two pairs of toggles 39, 40, have connecting pivots 41 which are moved towards each other when the toggles are straightened to drive the member 26 downwardly. The lower end of each toggle 39 and the upper end of each toggle 40 are connected, respectively, by a pivot 42 to the pitman 28, and by a fixed pivot 43 to the frame 12 of the machine. The toggle system 39, 40 is actuated by eccentrics 35, 135 on rotating shafts 34, 134 through connecting rods 44, 45, respectively. The shaft 34 is driven through a gear train 32 by a pinion 31 connected through a clutch to the driving shaft of an electric motor 29 (not shown), and a gear wheel 33 of the train 32 drives through pinions 46, 47 a gear wheel 133 on the shaft 134. The pinion 31 also drives a gear train 32' to actuate a similar toggle system 39', 40' for moving a pitman 28<SP>1</SP> carrying a plunger 26' which may be used as a forming member in conjunction with the member 26, or as a means for ejecting the finished element. The stroke of the member 26' may be simultaneous with or advanced or retarded with respect to the stroke of the member 26, and the relative timing of the strokes is effected by releasing screws connecting a pinion 49<SP>1</SP> with the first gear wheel 50<SP>1</SP> of the train 32', and turning the pinion 49<SP>1</SP> independently of the wheel 50' to rotate the remainder of the train 32' and set the toggle system 39<SP>1</SP>, 40<SP>1</SP> in any desired position, when the pinion 49<SP>1</SP> is again screwed to the gear wheel 50'. A die cover 23 is moved downwardly by a toggle system 25 which acts upon four pitmen 19 supporting a frame 22 carrying the cover 33. The toggle system 25 is actuated by an eccentric on a rotating shaft 60 (not shown) having a gear wheel meshing with a driving pinion 58 on the shaft 57 driven through a clutch by an electric motor 55 (not shown) so controlled that the cover 23 dwells in the closed position during the forming period. Alternatively the cover 23 is fixed and the die 14 is adapted to be moved vertically, or both the cover 23 and the die 14 are movable towards and away from each other.
