Abstract

684,165. Massage appliances. USAG ULTRASCHALL-GES. ZURICH. Jan. 11, 1950 [Jan. 12, 1949; Dec. 12, 1949], No. 782/50. Class 81 (ii). In a piezo-electric vibrator for transmitting supersonic waves into a solid or semi-solid, such as the human body, the output face of the crystal carries a metal plate, the thickness of which is a multiple of half a wavelength in the metal. By this means pressures at the surface of contact are substantially zero and the tendency to rupture is overcome. The crystal and plate are joined by a solvent-free cement such as a polymerisation product or Canada balsam, and the reverse face of the crystal is in contact with a thick metal damping electrode, which may have rounded edges or be associated with a guard ring, to prevent damage from corona discharges. In one practical embodiment the front plate 1, Fig. 3, is secured in a casing 8 and the back electrode 6 is held against the crystal 2 by a pressure member 6, through which also heat is conducted to a substance 9 of high thermal capacity or latent heat of fusion. In another form two or more oscillators 2, Fig. 8, feed into a metal plate 14 so as to produce in it pressure waves which are transmitted through a liquid to the body 15. The liquid may be enclosed in a pliable casing 16 of lead, having a flexible insert 17 and with inlet and outlet orifices. For the treatment of irregularly shaped surfaces several crystals may be used, engaging a common flexible back electrode of copper gauze against which they are held by a resilient backing.
