Abstract

683,738. Making chains. SODERLUND, B. G. Feb. 2, 1951 [March 24, 1950], No. 2595/51. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). A method of manufacturing chain links of the type known as Ewart links is characterised in that a rolled metal strip, preferably of rectangular cross-section, in heated condition is divided into blocks of link-blanks defined by lines A-A, A-A or B-B, B-B of Fig. 2 and having holes 2 and 3 by punching and cutting, each block consisting of at least two rows of link blanks disposed side by side and with the direction in which they will be stressed in use coinciding with the direction of rolling, indicated by arrow 15 and in that the said blocks are afterwards reheated and forged to form a tongue 6 and a pin 7, Figs. 3a and 3b, at opposite ends of each blank and are then annealed, hardened and machined to provide accurate coacting surfaces for the tongue and pin portions and to divide the blocks into individual links. After forging, the link blanks are machined to remove the portions 8, 9, 10 and 11, Fig. 4, and the individual links are formed by cutting along the lines X-X, Fig. 2.
