Abstract

3124. Wilson, C. S. Feb. 6. Forging chains; forging-dies; cutting chains from cruciform and like bars; punches.-A three-link coupling for railway vehicles is made from a hot rectangular bar by forging, trimming, and punching. The bar is hammered to the form shown in Fig. 1, and then placed between dies having recesses a<1>, b<1>, Fig. 2, to produce the blank shown in Fig. 5. This again is forged between dies having recesses b<2>, Figs. 6 and 7, to shape the end links b<3>. The fins b<4>, b<5>, Fig. 9, are trimmed off by coacting dies d, f, Figs. 11 and 12, the former having a loose central punch c to allow the trimmed link to be extracted laterally. The thick central link a<3> is then punched by the punches h, Fig. 17, i, Fig. 18, successively, while supported in the die g, Fig. 16. The connecting-portions j of the links are then heated, and the end links twisted laterally as shown in Fig. 19, so that they can be detached from the central link by a double punch. The links are finished by stamping and trimming.
