MAKING THE EYES OF HOES.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,326, dated July 26, 1887; Application filed October 21, 1886. Serial No. 216,844. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY ST. LAWRENCE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, not a citizen of the United States, residing at Northampton, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Making the Eyes of Hoes; and Ido declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to take a metallic hoe-blank of the desired shape and by a series of steps or operations form the eye therefor.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then clearly pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 ofthe drawings is a perspective view of the initial dies, and Fig. 20f, the pro.- duct thereof. Fig. 3 is an elevation, partly in section, of the secondary dies; Fig. 4, a horizont-al section on line w x of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 the product of the secondary dies. Fig. 6 is a "ertical section of Fig. 3, and Fig. 7 a section on line y y of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a per spective view of the completed hoe.
In the drawings, A A represent the initial dies, the former having three cutters, a a a, of which the cutter it makes the median slit b in the hoe-blank B, as shown in Fig. 2, while the cutters a a trim the edges 11, the blank having been out out to the preferred pattern. The-bottom die, A, has three corresponding cutters, on the outside of which pass the cutters of die A, being guided in the vertical end grooves, a a, formed,'preferably, by bending around the ends of the cutters a a. provided with stops 0 0 which regulate the depth of the hoe-eye and are held by the springs 0 0 I The blank B, with its slit b and trimmed edges 1) b, is laid upon the die 0 and the male die 0 brought down with suficient power to produce the blank D with a partially-formed eye, (1, consisting of two parallel flanges at right angles, or nearly so, to the plane of the body of the hoe. The blank D is held down upon the die 0 by the plate whose top flange is pivoted to a lever, G, fulcrumed on the post On the top of the die 0, which rests on base O is arranged the gage-stops c" 0, against which fit the shoulders d d of the blank D, to regulate the position of the blank on the female die. The male or punch die 0 opens theeye, the stops 0 yielding to the side pressure from its beveled sides. The blank D is now taken and the ends of the eye metal bent to form a lap-joint. It is then brought to a welding heat and placed upon the die E, with the shoulders against the stops 0 0. Then the male die F is forced down, pressing out the spring-stops e e and thoroughly welding together the laps of the joint, shaping the eye, and leaving it flush 011 the outer side with the hoe metal.
The male dies, as well as their corresponding female dies, are placed in my press or forging-machine, which is run by suitable power. 1
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understandingof my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is V 1. The method of producing the eye of a median slit and trimming the edges of the eye metal; secondly, turning the eye metal to form two parallel flanges at right angles, or nearly'so, to the hoe metal, and, thirdly, bending the edges of said flanges to form a lap-joint, said joint being welded and the eye shaped, as set forth.
