Class 38 (iii) [Also in Group XXXV] The control gear for the driving motor of a lift or the like incorporates the phase regulator 11 associated with a mercury arc rectifier system comprising grid controlled anodes a<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>1</SP>, connected respectively to the secondary windings t, t<SP>1</SP>, t<SP>2</SP> of a transformer so as to receive the maximum voltage therefrom, and non-grid controlled anodes a, b, c connected to a low voltage source (e.g. low voltage tappings on the windings t, t<SP>1</SP>, t<SP>2</SP>, the phase regulator being arranged to operate on the grids associated with the anodes a<SP>1</SP> b<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>1</SP> so as to vary the rectified output voltage between a fixed minimum value determined by the low voltage source connected to the anodes a, b, c and the maximum value supplied to the anodes a<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>1</SP>, in order to control the motor speed.
