Abstract

683,347. Cleaning webs and wires. STAAF, G. A. Dec. 4, 1950. [Aug. 10, 1950] No; 29627/50. Class 96. [Also in Groups I and XXIX] In an arrangement for cleansing filter webs or the like in the form of longitudinally-moving bands and comprising one or more nozzles which communicate with a source of fluid under pressure and are directed towards the web, each nozzle is arranged to perform a rapid revolving movement in a preferably circular path which is substantially parallel with the web so that a fluid jet leaving any one nozzle will sweep over a certain zone of breadth of the web twice for every revolution of the nozzle. A tube 11, Fig. 1, connected to a high-pressure water supply is mounted at right angles to the path of a continuously moving web, e.g. a Fourdrinier wire 10 and has secured to its underside bushings 15 each incorporating a bearing 16 in which rotates a sleeve 17 carrying diametricallyopposed nozzle pipes 19. The ends of the pipes 19 are turned down at an angle α to the horizontal and backwards from the direction of rotation at an angle # to the vertical, Fig. 2. The nozzle units are caused to rotate by the reaction of the jets issuing from them, for example at 1,000 revolutions per minute depending on the angle #. The nozzle diameter may be from 2 to 4 mm., preferably 2.5 mm., and the water pressure 2.5 to 6 kg/cm<SP>2</SP>, preferably 2.5 kg/cm<SP>2</SP>. Steam or gas may be used as a cleansing fluid, or gaseous and liquid cleansing fluids may be used simultaneously.
