Abstract

623,780. Spray - producers. MERRYWEATHER & SONS, Ltd., STUBINGTON, R. E., and MILLER, L. C. Feb. 4, 1947, No. 3297. [Class 69 (iii)] A reaction jet type water distributer for washing out oil tanks &c. comprises a rotating nozzle member carrying tangentially disposed nozzles, Fig. 1, which also rotates in a horizontal plane, having means for ensuring its continued rotation under varying conditions of water pressure and against temporary obstructions in the working parts. In the embodiment a stationary feed pipe D carries a fixed horizontal gear wheel E, under which a separate member F is attached, such that it rotates in a horizontal plane. Member F contains a rotary pump G, and a circular sleeve H on which a sleeve portion J of the rotating nozzle member is mounted. Sleeve J carries a gear wheel K engaging with wheel E. A hollow shaft L passes from a gear of the pump G, through F and carries a coupling member M loosely connected to a coupling member N secured to the nozzle rotating member. A port O connects the delivery side of the pump to the shaft L, whose other end connects with a leak hole P. The water outlet from the leak hole is dependent upon the relative positions of members M and N, and normally is slight. When pressure water is supplied through pipe D to the nozzles and pump G, the nozzles rotate as described, and the rotary gear pump G is operated. The restricted outlet causes a resistance to pump rotation, and through shaft L a resistance to rotation of the nozzle member J. Undue resistance or obstruction producing a lag in nozzle rotation causes coupling member M to move in advance of member N, the pump water outlet is thereby greatly increased and pump G drives the nozzle member.
