Abstract

682.981. Filling goafs &c. in mines. MARKHAM & CO., Ltd., and SPRAGG, H. March 2, 1951 [April 3, 1950], No. 8353/50. Class 85 A method of filling a goaf in a mine extending laterally of a gate comprises feeding the ripping dirt (obtained when driving the gate forward into the cut seam) to a stone crusher, feeding the crushed material to stowing machine and direct- \ ing a stream of crushed material from the stowing machine to the goaf. In longwall mining, Fig. 1, ripping dirt is brought up on the elevator conveyer 15 and falls into a hopper 17 of a portable stone crusher 16, from whence it is conveyed by an upwardly inclined conveyer 19 to a pneumatic stower 21 having a flexible delivery pipe 22. Shuttering 23 may be arranged in the goaf on either side of the gate. When the seam is being cut, the end of the conveyer 15 is swung downwardly so as to deliver the coal on to a gate conveyer 13. In " single unit mining, at least one loading gate 24 and at least one supply gate 25 extend between the cut seam 26 and a cross passage. Ripping dirt from the supply gate 25 fed on to the face conveyer 14 combines with the ripping dirt from the loading gate 24 and the whole is fed by the loading conveyer 28 to the stone crusher 16, located in the cross passage. The crushed stone is either, delivered by wagon 29 or conveyer to the stower conveyer and thence to the pneumatic stower 24 from whence the pipes 22 deliver it behind shuttering. 23. Alternatively, the stone crusher and stower are located in the loading gate. In " double unit " mining, having two supply gates and a single loading gate, the ripping dirt from the supply gates is conveyed to combine with that from the loading gate and the whole carried by the loading conveyer to the stone crusher.
