Abstract
Alkali metal fluotitanates or fluozirconates are produced by fusing an intimate admixture of an alkali metal fluosilicates-the alkali metals lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium and caesium being specifically mentioned-an oxidic compound of titanium or zirconium, and an oxidic compound of an alkali metal, e.g. the oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, nitrate, sulphate or oxalate, at say 1100-1200 DEG C, comminuting the product and leaching with an acidic aqueous medium. Fusion may be effected in a stainless steel vessel in a fuel fired furnace, or electrically, using electrodes immersed in the mixture and the molten product discharged in a thin stream into water. The thus comminuted material may be ground moist in a pebble mill, and after addition of the quench liquor, sulphuric, nitric, hydrochloric &c. acid is added to produce a final pH 2.5-4. The mixture is boiled and filtered, and the fluotitanate or zirconate crystallized by cooling. Oxides or silicates of titanium may be employed, e.g. rutile, baddleyite, zircon. The admixture usually comprises equimolar proportions of fluosilicate and oxidic compound of titanium or zirconium and 1/6 -\ba2/3 mol. oxidic alkali metal compound per mol. titanium of zirconium compound.
