Abstract

682,697. Electric heating resistances. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and PAGE, B. H. Jan. 26, 1951 [Feb. 3, 1950], No. 2868/50. Class 39(iii) A resistance heater for a stream of fluid such as air has a fusible element 15 connected in series with the resistance 10, so that although the fuse carries the current under normal conditions in the fluid stream, the fuse melts if the flow of fluid is restricted before the resistance or its surroundings are damaged by excess heat. Thus air is blown by, a fan 12 through a duct 14 over a resistance wire 10 wound on a notched tapering former 11 in the duct 14, and the fuse 15 is mounted in the air flow in between the resistance and a connection 16 thereto, so that on excessive heating e.g. due to failure of the fan, the fuse melts. An asbestos thread near the fuse may tie two turns of the resistance together to prevent displacement of the end of the resistance wire. The fuse is a pellet or wire of lead-antimony alloy.
