Abstract

682,507. Structural bars. SPARSHATT, G. W. June 15, 1950 [March 15, 1949; Jan. 31, 1949], Nos. 7054/49 and 2461/50. Class 20(ii) [Also in Group XXXII] A metalwork structure which comprises mechanically interconnected circular or oval section metal tubes and panels is characterized by the mechanical support of the panels by the tubes through capping members which are of channel section with a base having a central longitudinal rib and which are disposed with the summit of the rib in contact with a tube and with the external surface of the base in surface contact with a panel save where the said external surface is depressed to form the :said rib, the thickness of the sides and base of the channel not exceeding 0.064 inches. The invention is particularly applicable to a construction of the type described in Specifications 607,281 and 607,319, the tubes 8a, Fig. 4, being provided with capping members 1 formed with longitudinal depressions 5, 6 and 7 having arcuate bases to seat on the surface of the tubes. The capping members are secured to the tubes by rivets 10 and further rivets 12 secure. panels 11 to the outer faces of the capping members. In a structure having inner and outer panels, a further capping member may be arranged in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, with the respective depressions 6 and 7 inter-engaged in overlapping relationship. The profile of the capping members may correspond with the outer dimensions of the blocks which connect the tubular elements of the structure. A typical frame for a vehicle body, Fig. 6, which incorporates capping members both supported on tubes in the manner described, and unsupported, comprises a transverse tubular member 14 provided with a floor supporting capping member 20 secured to longitudinals 13 and attached to holed blocks 19 which each carry a short vertical tube 21. Upright capping members 22 are attached to the tubes 21 and carry gusset plates 24 and stays 25, 26 to support a curved capping member 23 to which panelling is attached. The roof member comprises a transverse tube 28 having a capping member 31 for the attachment of internal panelling and a bowed capping member 32 for the attachment of external panelling. The extremities of the tube 28 are attached to longitudinal tubular members 29 which seat within and are attached to capping members 27 attached to the upper ends of the side frames. Specification 607,318 [Group XXXII], also is referred to.
