Abstract

682,013. Forging. NATIONAL MACHINERY CO. March 17, 1950 [April 6, 1949], No. 6709/50. Class 83 (iv). A die device for a forging press comprises a pair of complementary die rolls 23, 33, roll 23 pivoted on its geometric axis e and roll 33 pivoted on an axis a eccentric of its geometric axis b, whereby rotation of the rolls moves the pivot a toward roll 23 and at the same time moves the geometric axis b away from said roll. The lower bolster 20 supports integral rolls 23, 24, gear 25 and forging dies 21, 22. The upper bolster plate 30 is mounted for vertical reciprocation by a crank-shaft through a one revolution clutch and carries rolls 33, 34, gear 35 and forging dies 31, 32. A roll supporting block 45 mounting the rolls 23, 24 has a trunnion member 46 pivotable on a pin 43 and a stop face 47 is formed on the roll block for engaging a stop face 48 on a trunnion block 40. The upper rolls are mounted in a similar fashion to the lower rolls, in the upper bolster 30, a stop face 57 being formed on the roll block 55 for engagement with an adjustable stop screw 58 whereby the correct mesh of the rollgears is ensured. Spring - loaded rods 61, 71 urge the lower and upper rolls, respectively, to their initial position upon retraction of the upper bolster 30, the blank B being thereby re-rolled in the reverse direction, and supported in the press at the conclusion of each cycle, so that its transfer to the next roll pass or die is a lateral movement only. Blocks 49, 59, Fig. 2, mounted on the upper and lower roll blocks, engage each other when the upper bolster descends and relieve the gears of a portion of the heavy starting load.
