Abstract
681,115. Making endless metal band. OSNABRUCKER KUPFER-UND DRAHTWERK. Aug. 25, 1950 [Dec. 17, 1949], No. 21056/50. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). In a method of making an endless metal band in which metal strips are joined together by soldering or welding, the strips are formed with thickened ends so that the portions of the band affected by the heat on both sides of the joint may be cold-worked and given the same mechanical properties as the unaffected portions of the band. Bands for use in the manufacture of photographic films are made from copper strips which may be reduced in thickness between the ends by reverse rolling and joined by soldering or welding. The joint and the portions of the strip on both sides of the joint are cold worked by hammering or stretching, and surplus metal at the joint is removed, e.g. by grinding, to produce a band of uniform thickness. The band is finally stretched on two rotating drums of a tensioning machine to obtain a surface free from undulations.
