Abstract

1474818 Making endless belts; stretching VOLVO-CAR BV 11 Dec 1974 [11 Dec 1973] 53516/74 Headings B3E and B3A [Also in Division F2] An assembly of endless metal bands 1, 2, 3 (of which there may be, e.g. twelve, and which may be combined to form a driving belt) are fitted around one another on a template, consisting in one case of two pulleys, are stretched and then heated, in order to remove any play between the bands. The bands may be heated while they are stretched between the rotating pulleys, or may be heated after stretching. In an alternative apparatus, the bands are stretched by inserting an expandable mandrel between them (Fig. 1, not shown) and may simultaneously be subject to external pressure. Each band may be formed from seamless tubing or may be welded from a length of strip by electron beam welding. The bands may be of slightly different lengths before stretching, or of the same length. The bands may be of a precipitation-hardening material such as titanium copper or beryllium copper alloy.
