Abstract

680,937. Electrodepositing copper-tin alloys. CITY AUTO STAMPING CO. June 8, 1950 [June 11, 1949], No. 14318/50. Class 41. A process of electrodepositing an alloy of copper and tin comprises passing an electric current from an anode to a cathode through an electrolyte having a pH value of from 6.5 to 10.5 and containing dissolved therein a soluble alkali-metal cuprous complex, a soluble alkalimetal stannous complex, an excess of alkalimetal pyrophosphate, a polypeptide and an alkali-metal orthophosphate. The alkali-metal radical may be replaced by the ammonium radical. The word " polypeptide " is intended to include proteins, amino acids, glue and gelatine. The cuprous complex may be formed from a cuprous salt dissolved in potassium cyanide, and the stannous complex from a stannous salt such as stannous sulphate, chloride, or pyrophosphate, dissolved in potassium pyrophosphate. In the process separate anodes of tin and copper are preferably used, although an anode of tin and one of tin-copper alloy may be used. As an example of the process, a basis metal is immersed in a bath consisting of from 8 to 300 grms. per litre of a pyrophosphate compound selected from ammonium, potassium, and sodium pyrophosphates, from 2 to 230 grms. per litre of a soluble cuprous compound selected from cuprous cyanide and halide, from 2 to 350 grms. per litre of a cyanide selected from ammonium, potassium, and sodium cyanides, from 2 to 50 grams per litre of a soluble stannous compound selected from stannous chloride, pyrophosphate and sulphate, from 5 to 120 grms. per litre of an orthophosphate compound selected from ammonium, potassium, and sodium mono-, di-, and triorthophosphates, from 0.01 to 5 grms. per litre of protein selected from glue and gelatine, and water. A current is passed through the bath, in which there is a potential drop of from 0.5 to 2 volts between the anodes, the copper anode to cathode voltage being from 2 to 3 volts and the tin-containing anode to cathode voltage being from 0.1 to less than 2 volts.
