Abstract

Soaps and other alkaline washing agents are modified to prevent roughening action on the skin by incorporating up to 0.35 gm. mol., preferably 0.035 to 0.245 gm. mol., per kg. of washing agent of an aliphatic aldehyde containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms. Acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde and grape sugar are specified as suitable aldehydes. The addition of the aldehydes to washing powders containing soaps and soda and to synthetic washing agents of alkaline reaction is mentioned. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, refers to the use of formaldehyde and succinaldehyde. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
