A doll or the like has an eye member 21 movable to bring any of a number of irises 43 into register with an eye socket 44, a movable eyelid 38, and mechanism arranged so that by two manual operations of the mechanism the eye-lid 38 is closed and then reopened and the eye member is moved, while the eyelid is closed, to bring the succeeding iris into register with the eye socket. One eye member may have a series of pairs of irises or a pair of eye members may each carry a series of corresponding irises. The doll's head is made in two parts and is held on the body 31 by elastic 32 looped over a hook 33 on a strip 34 attached to bracket 24 which carries the eye unit and is secured within the head to blocks 23. The eye members 21 each carrv six irises 43 and are pivoted, with eyelids 38, on shaft 22 which is journaled in bracket 24 and carries a ratchet wheel 27 and a toothed wheel 28, Fig. 4. The ratchet wheel is rotated by pawl 30 on lever 29, which is operated through links 26, 47 by bell crank 46, under control of a push button 45. When push button 45 is pressed the pawl 30 is advanced and the wheel 27 is held by a pawl 37 and when button 45 is released an iris, aligned with the socket, is turned out of register with the socket. On repeating the operation, the succeeding iris comes into register with the socket. Meanwhile, toothed wheel 28 engaging a roller 40 causes the eyelid 38 to close and open at the appropriate time. Voice devices, one of which is shown at 49 in Fig. 3, are operated respectively through links 52, 51 when the button is pressed and released.
