Abstract

679,052. Wrapping-machines. SCOTT, A. T., and MARS, Ltd. April 13, 1951 [April 26, 1950], No. 10327/50. Class 94(i). In a machine for wrapping square-angled articles, such as sweetmeat bars, a row of spaced articles is enveloped in a paper tube 3, which is fed by belts 1 and 2 between rollers 4, 5, formed with segments 6, 7, and blades 8, 9, which crimp and sever the tube between adjacent articles, each partially-wrapped article being delivered to a transfer belt 17, driven at a higher speed than the belts 1, 2, and passing between driven rollers 22, 23, provided with rubber facings 24, 25, which accelerate the article to the speed of the transfer belt. The latter rides over a skid 40, under which passes the upper run of a horizontal delivery belt 41 arranged at right-angles to the belt 17, the articles being transferred from the belt 17 to the belt 41 by pairs of fingers 58, 59, pivotally mounted on chain conveyers 49, 50, arranged above and parallel to the belt 41. Each article is fed under resilient blades 73, 74, Fig. 5, urged downwardly by spring- loaded plungers 75, 76, and serving to press the article against the belt which cooperates with the chain conveyers to feed the article between opposed folding boxes 79, 80, whereby the extending crimped end portions of the wrapper are folded against the ends of the article. Each folding box comprises folding strips 85, 86, 95, and 97, or 87, 88, 96 and 98, so arranged that the end portions 93, 94, are flattened, formed with upwardly and downwardly extending folds and finally pressed against the ends of the article. In a modification, Fig. 11, the end portions are flattened and bent downwardly by ploughs 99 or 100 and 101. Spots of adhesive are applied to the inner surfaces of their lower portions by rollers 105 and these portions bent upwardly and inwardly against the lower face of the article by bent-in portions 107 of the ploughs, the wrapped articles being then transferred to a second delivery belt 108 against which they are pressed by resilient strips 110, 111. In a further modification, Fig. 12 (not shown), the ploughs are replaced by pairs of twisted folding belts.
