Abstract

Phenol-aldehyde resins are prepared by condensing 1 mol. of a phenol with 1-3 mols. of formaldehyde in presence of an alkaline catalyst free from ammonia or amines to obtain a condensation product containing methylol groups, and heating this product in presence of an alkaline catalyst with an aliphatic aldehyde or ketone containing 2-4 carbon atoms and having at least two hydrogen atoms attached to a carbon atom in the alpha-position to the carbonyl group; said aldehyde or ketone being present in an amount at least that required to react with the methylol groups and with unreacted formaldehyde. Specified phenols are phenol itself, meta cresol, the metal xylenols and polyhydric phenols, e.g. resorcinol. Specified aldehydes and ketones are acetaldehyde, propyl aldehyde, butyraldehyde, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone. In examples (1), (2) and (3) 10 mols. of phenol are reacted respectively with 10, 20 and 30 mols. of phenol in presence of caustic soda and at room temperature, the product refluxed with 10 mols of acetone and free acetone distilled off; (4) and (5) 10 mols. of phenol and 20 mols. of phenol are reacted in presence of caustic soda and at room temperature and the mass vacuum dehydrated, the product is then reacted respectively with (a) acetaldehyde and dimethyl amine, and (b) methyl ethyl ketone and dimethyl amine.
