Abstract
678,269. Overhead hoists fitted on vehicles. DUGHER, T. June 5. 1948. [May 1, 1948] No. 11977/48. Class 78 (iv). [Also in Group XXXII] A motor vehicle for transporting animals comprises an overhead track member mounted in the vehicle for movement in a longitudinal direction, a carriage mounted for movement on and extending lengthwise of the track member, lifting tackle moun, ted on one end of th e carriage and manually operable winch mechanism mounted on the other end of the carriage for operating the tackle. An injured horse may be lifted into the vehicle illustrated bv means of a sling and lifting tackle 36, Fig. 1, mounted to slide along a track 23 which in turn is mounted to slide longitudinally in the vehicle, stops 29 limiting both sliding motions. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the track 23 is of I-section and is mounted by means of rollers 22, 22, 34 to slide in brackets 31 on transverse members 32 secured to transversals 33 of the roof of the vehicle. A carriage 24 comprising side frames 36 is mounted by means of rollers 28, 28, 37 to slide on the track 23 and carries a winch 38 manually operated through worm gearing 47, 48, and pulleys 41, 41. From the winch 38 a cable 39 passes over the pulleys 41, 41, under a lifting pulley 42 carrying a hook 43 and to a swivel 44. An injured horse may be lifted into the vehicle by backing the vehicle up to the horse and moving the carriage 24 and track 23 to the position indicated in broken lines in Fig. 1 so that the lifting tackle hangs directly over the horse. The hook 43 is attached to a sling around the horse and the winch 38 operated to raise the horse so that by moving the carriage 24 and track 23 inwardly the horse may be placed in the vehicle : suitable hand or power operated winch mechanism may be provided for facilitating this movement. The lifting tackle may serve to suspend the horse in the vehicle or alternatively may be stowed in the portion of the body overhanging the bonnet of the vehicle. In an alternative construction the brackets 31 are mounted by means of rollers for movement along transverse guides so that the track 23 may be adjusted laterally. The vehicle body (see Group XXXII) has removable rear doors 13 and is formed with front and rear compartments for attendants and with two boxes for horses separated by a central partition which may be swung aside and with doors on each side and at front and rear. Specification 150,029, [Class 78 (iv)], is referred to.
