Abstract

677,444. Automatic speed control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 3, 1949 [Oct. 12, 1948], No. 25379/49. Class 38 (iv). The speed of a D.C. motor is synchronized with the frequency of an A.C. supply, by means of a synchronous switch driven by the motor to select positive or negative halves of each cycle of the supply frequency to energize a regulating field. The control may be applied to amplidyne motor, or a motor with an amplidyne exciter, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), or a conventional D.C. motor, Fig. 11. As shown, the shunt field 95 is adjusted by resistor 96 to run the motor about synchronous speed. The rotary switch 100, which has a 90 degree insulating portion (shown shaded) energizes the regulating field 97 from the A.C. supply. At synchronous speed equal positive and negative halves of the A.C. cycle are fed to the regulating field, Fig. 7 (I) (not shown). If the speed increases or decreases positive on negative halfcycles, Fig. 7 (II) and (IV) (not shown), are fed to the regulating field to boost or buck the main field. To synchronize at sub-multiplies of the fundamental synchronous speed, switches with two or more insulating segments may be used, Figs. 4-6 (not shown).
