Abstract

The processes of Specification 676,772 for oxidizing compounds Ar-CHR1R2 to peroxides Ar-CR1R2-OOH and of Specification 676,771 for decomposing the peroxides to phenols and ketones are operated successively and continuously, the unreacted compound Ar-CHR1R2 being separated from the reaction mixture, purified and recycled; in the formul Ar is an aryl group which may be alkyl-substituted and R1 and R2 are the same or different alkyl groups. The reactants, catalysts used and reaction conditions are similar to those given in the Specifications mentioned above. Examples show the conversion (via the peroxide) of (1) cumene to phenol, (2) p-cymene to p-cresol, and (3) diisopropylbenzene to hydroquinone, acetone also being produced. Other suitable starting materials are sec.-butyl-benzene, p-ethyl-isopropylbenzene, isopropylnaphthalene and others given in Specification 676,772. Specification 626,095 also is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes the additional catalysts for decomposing the peroxides that are mentioned in Specification 676,771. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
