Abstract
1,2-Dichlorobutene-3 and 1,4-dichlorobutene-2 are made by passing a gaseous stream comprising at least two volumes of butadiene and one volume of chlorine, to either of which reactants has been added not more than 1 per cent of their total weight of oxygen or air, through a reacting zone at a temperature in the range 180-240 DEG C., containing a bed of finely-divided contact material such as coke, with a linear velocity to maintain the contact material evenly in suspension, isolating the dichlorobutenes and recycling unreacted butadiene. Advantageously the temperature is 220-230 DEG C. and 0.1-0.3 per cent of oxygen is added. Coke and sand of particle sizes 50-200, and 100-200 mesh B.S.S. are useful contact materials. When air is used purging of inert gases is necessary. An example is provided. Specifications 513,947, 518,697 and 669,338 are referred to.
