Abstract

Trichlorethylene is produced by passing tetrachlorethane at a space velocity of 0.05 to 1.0m-1 referred to liquid tetrachlorethane, empty reactor volume and normal atmospheric pressure through a reaction zone containing a bed of finely divided inert solid heat transfer medium maintained at a temperature in the range 390-500 DEG C. so that the finely divided material is maintained in suspension within the reactor, and isolating the desired trichlorethylene. Sand consisting of particles of size 50-150 mesh is preferably used as the heat transfer medium. A suitable source of supply of the tetrachlorethane is the crude product obtained industrially by the chlorination of acetylene. In the example crude tetrachlorethane, obtained by the chlorination of acetylene is vaporized and fed to a reactor containing sand. Trichlorethylene and hydrogen chloride with small amounts of dichlorethylene, perchlorethylene and higher boiling compounds are obtained.
