Abstract

676,132. Control of two A.C. motors. NELSON, W. A. Feb. 9, 1951. [Feb. 9, 1950] No. 3332/50. Class 38 (iii). A slip-ring induction motor 1 is coupled to a second A.C. motor 3 which has at least one operating speed greater than that of the motor 1. A controller 6 may be set to apply alternating-current to the motor 1 and simultaneously to supply the motor 3 with directcurrent so that the second motor acts as a brake, the torque of which is variable according to the values of the applied voltage and rotor resistance, and creeping speeds are provided. For increased speed operation the motor 1 is operated from the A.C. supply in the usual manner, and, for speeds in excess of the operating speed of the motor 1, alternating-current is applied to the motor 3 and the motor 1 is switched off. The motor-shaft carries a pulley 5 and a brake 4 which becomes effective in the "off" position of the controller to prevent rotation of the motors by the load.
